PIL to ban WhatsApp in India

                                       -Sudharsan

What?

Gurugram based RTI activist Sudhir Yadav filed a "Public Interest Litigation" (PIL) seeking to overthrow whatsapp.

Why?

He says the new end to end encryption feature would make it easier for terrorist and criminals to communicate with themselves without any fear.

How?

End to end encryption takes the middle man away from viewing your content,  your messages or phonecalls will not be stored in any servers except your phones.

Who?

A bench of Supreme Court Chief Justice T S Thakur and Justice A M Khanwilkar rejected the PLI citing that there is no law against encryption in our constitution.

And so?

We in News On The Go believe that privacy is very important, and it must be safe guarded, but if the law requires certain data or information to be revealed because of the information's significance in the case, then the officials involved should have full power to access such information, it is after all for our saftey.

But no police or government should misuse power they have and bypass the legal framework and gain private information without a warrant. End to end encryption prevents that.

Since the misuse of private information is more common than terrorists abusing benign services like WhatsApp, the end to end encryption's pros clearly outweighs the cons.
