What?
AgustaWestland is an Anglo- Italian company that came in to being after the merger of Agusta and Westland Helicopters, in 1999.
When?
India signed a contract to purchase 12 AW-101 helicopters from AgustaWestland in 2010, in a deal valued at Rs 3,700 crore.
Why?
These helicopters were for the Communication Squadron of Indian Air Force, to be used by high ranked officials like the Prime Minister. IAF felt the present helicopters need to be replaced to fly in places with elevation beyond 2000 meters.
The AW-101 helicopter also used by the President of the US has advanced electronic equipment that can detect and neutralize threats.
How?
On February 12, 2013, Italian police arrested Giuseppe Orsi, the head of the parent company of AgustaWestland.

According to the reports filed by Italian investigators Giuseppe is alleged to have paid 490 crore
Via middle men.

It was also states that they had paid ₹500 million to the manage the media.
Giuseppe Orsi
And so
The helicopters don't even meet the altitude requirements the air force wanted. The height requirements were changed to help secure the deal.
Following the reports the former defense minister A.K Anthony agreed corruption has occurred.
The UPA then put the deal on hold citing breach of integrity and recovered the ₹2068 crore it had already paid.
In April 2016 court in Milan concluded that there is corruption involved and sentenced Giuseppe Orsi to 4.5
Years in jail. The Italian government officials and courts have completed their roles and sentenced the bribe givers.
But CBI has yet find the bribe takers (officials and politicians) who had yet again executed a scam worth a billon rupees.
