What?

Scientists in England have developed a material that when filled in to the cavity of the teeth can help in regeneration of the dentine.

Where?

Teeth has 4 major parts, the hardest outer covering the enamel, the bone like bulk of the teeth- the dentine, the pulp is the vascular and nervous layer of the teeth, and the cementum that attaches the teeth to the gums.
This works by stimulating the pulp in to producing more dentine.

How?

The substance is filled in to the cavity like a regular filling and hardened with UV rays, this method is called "pulp capping," it is used to protect the pulp from necrosis and bacterial invasion in case of a cavity. But instead of just protecting the pulp like a regular calcium hydroxide or Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) would, the "new undisclosed material" can stimulate the nerves and the cells around the pulp to proliferate, hence giving the teeth the capacity to regenerate.

And so

This method has won 2nd place in the UK Royal Society of Chemistry’s Emerging Technologies Competition 2016. This news should make your trip to the dentist less scary.
